Well, the AMEP no longer exists at this college! Our lovely students have had to go elsewhere to finish their 510 hours! Perhaps one day they will return to do more English or another course here! I wish them all the best for the future.
I've really enjoyed my years on the AMEP and will miss it and the students dearly!
I'll still have a blog going with my ESOL 4 students. Have a look at this link if you want to check it out and/or contact me!
Keep blogging!

Week 8
G'day all
I can't believe that this is the last post for the semester and the last post I'll publish for an AMEP class for a very very long time!
Well I think you all had an enjoyable time on the excursion last Thursday! I know I did! I hope you weren't too concerned when we headed towards Wollongong on the way home!!! You did get to see a magnificient view of the coast down to Kiama! That was an added bonus!
Naturally, your first task today is to write a recount of the excursion. You can look at the slideshow to jog your memory about what we saw!
When you've done that, you can use the time to perfect your powerpoint for tomorrow if you wish.
If you don't need to do that, then watch this episode of The Road Less Travelled. Here is the audio and these are the activities For those of you who want to follow the serial to the end then look at Cork2010 and you'll find the rest of it there in the posts.
Have a look at Issues in English in the start up menu. Choose a topic that interests you and complete some of the activities. When you've done that, send me an email (address on the board) with a short summary of what you read/listened to and what kinds of activities you completed ie grammar/comprehension etc.
Well, that brings me to the end of this blog for the semester! I hope you've enjoyed your time learning English with us and I wish you all the very best for the future! Those of you who are leaving St George, I hope that one day you'll come back to study here! For those of you staying to do other courses here then don't forget to say 'hello' when you see me! And remember, you can always look at the blog any time you like!
Take care and happy blogging!

Powerpoint tutorial
G'day all
As part of your oral presentation you'll have to produce a powerpoint slide show. I told you that I would show you how to use the program and that you could practise at home. So, have a look at this link and follow the prompts to produce your own powerpoint presentation. Have a look at my first attempt at creating a slide show! I just tried to use as many techniques as possible for fun!
Have fun!

Week 6
G'day all
I hope you all had a great weekend. I had a lovely one. I went to a card making class on Saturday morning and in the afternoon I went to a party. I also went to a housewarming party on Sunday. Being out so much meant I didn't get much housework done but never mind, it will still be there next week!!
If you didn't do any of the activities from last week's blog then you can do them AFTER you've done today's work!
Posture is very important as you all know. The first exercise most of you did in this class was correct posture when using a computer. So, print off this worksheet and open the video link to answer the questions. DO NOT read the transcript. Look and listen to the video. You can practise your reading by opening the 2 links on the right hand side of the page. When you have finished, write an information report about Posture in your blog. Andrew has explained to you what the structure of a report should be and the language used. Do a draft on paper and when finished, show it to me for correction. Then you can publish it.
Remember that next Monday will be a public holiday. Do you know what it's for? Put a comment at the end of this post if you know the answer!
Here is the audio and activities for Episode 7 of the radio serial!
Take care and happy blogging!

G'day all
I hope your weekend was relaxing but fun at the same time! I didn't do anything exciting but my family and I had a big clean up inside and outside the house! The girls and I did some rearranging and tidying up of clothes, books and furniture. My husband worked outside in the garden. It was a busy weekend but we had a lot of fun being together.
I hope you're all happy with the lovely certificates you received from the Student Association as a thank you for your efforts during the Health Expo. I forgot to take a group photo! Perhaps we can get one another day!
My apologies if the webquest was a bit hard last week! Ungfortunately, I don't have time these days to make up my own webquests so have to rely on what other people produce! I hope you learnt something new about Australia anyway!!!
Sorry I can't be with you today but hopefully I'll be back tomorrow! Andrew would like you to get started on the research for your information reports but you can also do the activities below first or after your internet searches!
Already? Yet? Do you how and when to use them? Check out your knowledge of them in this little grammar quiz to test your understanding of the words. Let me know how you get on and if you need to do some more work on them in class!
Here is the audio and activities for Episode 7 of the radio serial!

Week 4
G'day all
I hope you all had a great weekend! The weather was so mild wasn't it? It was lovely to sit outside in the fresh air and catch up on a bit of vitamin D without the risk of sunburn! (I was not out in the danger times between 11 and 3!)
I was very pleased with the great recounts you wrote of both the Health Expo and Phoebe's alarm! Your English was very good and most of you wrote recounts of a very high standard! Well done!
By the way, there'll be a thank you morning tea for you in the student association room tomorrow at 10.30am!
As we were talking about fire safety in the home recently, I thought you might be interested in watching a little TV news clip. Have a look at this link which shows the damage caused by a fire! I just thought it was an interesting and informative piece of TV footage.
Since you've all moved to Australia to live, I thought you'd like to learn a bit about your 'new' country. Try this webquest which was actually created by a teacher in Spain! Hopefully there won't be any problems opening the links! The activities were originally designed for groups of 3. You can work on your own. Answer the questions the teacher asks. If you scroll down the page you'll find the links for the answers. You don't have to make a poster but you can choose the activity for student 2 or 3 and answer in your blog!
Ask me for a map of Australia so you can mark the cities!
When you finish that, here is the next episode of The Road Less Travelled. Here is the audio and the worksheets are here!
Happy blogging!

Week 3
G'day all
Well what a great day we had at the Health Expo! I'd like to thank you all for your food contributions and also your efforts selling raffle tickets and your general participation in the event. I hope you enjoy the photos and videos! First off today, write a recount of the Health Expo in your blogs!
Well done to all of you who completed the webquest and the listening last week. I know it was a bit hard without the printed text but you did very well. For those of you interested in finding out more about food, nutrition and healthy eating check out the Better Health Channel website. Everything you ever wanted to know can be found here!
Remember in class I talked about the Friends episode with a smoke alarm/detector? Well, my daughter, Katie told me that it's in a You tube video so have a look at it here. When you've finished, write a recount in your blog of the events in the video!
Today is also the time to catch up on all the things you still need to do. When you are up to date, let me know and I'll direct you to some activities you can do!

Week 2
G'day all
Firstly, I hope all you mothers in the class had a very Happy Mother's Day yesterday! I know I did!
I was very pleased with the recounts you wrote last week. Well done! I realise too that the work on the Leonardo di Caprio webquest was long so to begin today I think you should go back to last week's blog and complete the activities. Then you can move on to today's work!
As you know, during the week we were working on activities related to fire safety. (By the way, did any of you got to visit a fire station on Saturday during their open day?) Anyway, on Thursday, whilst driving to work, I heard on the radio about a website that the Fire Brigade has created. It's a home fire safety audit! It's a series of questions which help assess your fire safety risk! You don't have to register or anything but it's good to do! Thankfully my home fire risk is low!!! Open this link and try it yourself!
On Wednesday, as you know, the Student Association will hold its annual Health Expo. As it's all about healthy lifestyles, try this quiz and see how much you know about heathy eating! Then listen to this podcast from the BetterHealth channel and answer these questions.
For those who are up to date and have time, here is Episode 5 of The Road Less Travelled. Open the written exercises here and the audio link here.
Photo of 2 of my daughters, Lucy and Katie, with my huge bunch of flowers yesterday!

Term 2, Week 1
G'day all
I hope you had a good break from class but that you still managed to practise your English! I had a marvellous time in both Thailand and New York! I am really grateful that I was able to have these experiences.
I'm sorry but I just had NO time to post the photos or videos from our party. I hope you enjoy them today!
Did you go to the Easter Show? Did you do anything interesting? How did you spend your days? Write a recount in your blog of how you spent the 2 weeks.
I'm sure you've all heard of the actor Leonardo di Caprio? Well, today I'd like you to do a webquest to find out some information about him. For example, did you know that he's very interested in environmental issues? Have a look at this website and follow the links/prompts to answer the questions listed on the main page. Then use the answers to write a report in your blog.
Here is Episode 4 of our English serial. Who's your favourite character? Is the story developing as you guessed it would? Are you still sure that your predictions will come true???

If you still have time then try these activities. This one is on Australian slang and this one is on animal idioms!
This will be the last term of English for most of you before you go on to further studies in other areas. Let's make it a good and valauble learning time!

Skin cancer
G'day all
I know we're coming to the end of summer but I think it's a good time to look at this topic. This morning on the news there was a report about Australian women's lack of Vitamin D. Click on this link and listen to the report. How can women increase their intake of Vitamin D? Write your opinion in your blog.
However, many Australians are sun worshippers and spend too much time in the sun!
Read Better Health Skin Cancer, download the worksheet Skin Cancer. (You can print it. This is part of your reading assessment). Do the Skin Cancer risk test. It will help you understand if you are at risk because of your lifestyle choices.

Week 8
G'day all!
I can't believe tthat this is the last blog post for the term! I think the term has gone very quickly, don't you? I hope you feel that your English has improved over this time. Remember that the blog is available to you from home so there is no reason why you can't continue to do writing from home! Just email me your work before you post it if you want it corrected or ask me in class!
A couple of weeks ago we were looking at ways of improving our English inside and outside the classroom. Have a look at this wallwisher and see if you can add your ideas to it! Simply double click anywhere on the page to add your idea and then click 'ok'.
In class on Tuesday I mentioned the Easter Show. Today I'd like you to work on a webquest to find out about the Show. Print off these worksheets and follow the links to answer the questions. I'll collect the work when you've finished.
Here's the video of you singing Advance Australia Fair! I'll publish your interviews during the holidays because they take a very long time and I don't want to publish some and not all of them at the same time! Enjoy!

G'day all
Thank you so much for your active participation in the Harmony Day activity last Wednesday. It was especially great to see Murtini, Winarty and Lutfun there when they didn't even have class! Thanks also for singing Advance Australia Fair so well (and not just lip-synching!!). First off this morning I'd like you to write a recount of the event in your blog. You can even copy my slideshow and put it in your blog.
We took a lot of photos there so I hope you enjoy looking at them. Next week I'll get some of the photos printed and give you all a copy!
I had a great weekend! I spent it in Melbourne at the Formula 1 Grand Prix. I met some lovely radio, TV and sports people. They were competing in the Lexus celebrity race at the GP. Everyone had a great time and I came back quite late last night feeling a bit tired!
Did any of you turn off your lights during Earth Hour on Sat night? Do you know what it was for?
What do you think it means? Have a look at the following link and read about the event. Then click on the question What will you be doing? and read the suggestions offered. In your blog, write what YOU did for Earth Hour and add any other suggestions you can think of that people could have done!
Have a look at this YouTube video at home to get an idea of how important Earth Hour has become!
The world has recently experienced some devastating natural disasters. We've had floods in Queensland and Victoria, earthquakes in Christchurch and Japan and of course the tsunami as well. Open the following worksheet and print it off. Then listen to the podcasts about Floods and Hurricanes and complete the activities. Hand it to me when completed.
Have a good week and happy blogging!

Week 6
G'day all!
Do you know what Australia is celebrating today? For those of you who don't then it's Harmony Day. What is Harmony Day? What does it mean? Have a look at this link and watch the video with Senator Lundy and answer these questions to help you better understand the concept of Harmony Day.
Here at TAFE, we'll celebrate this event on Wednesday afternoon with a little get-together in the Conference room. There will be couple of students talking about their experiences in Australia and some singing too! As with every celebration, there will be food of course, but we are asking the students to 'bring a plate'!!!!
There will also be tea and coffee available! How many of you drink coffee? What do you like? Flat white? Cappuccino?? Have a listen to this interview with Annette who used to work in the college canteen. Print off the worksheet too and complete it. As this is a casaul conversation not everything that is said is clear because there is a bit of background noise. I do think though that it is clear enough for you to complete the worksheet.
Last semester, I posted links to an English radio podcast every week. I know that it was well liked by those who listened to it. How would you like to follow this English serial here every week? It's called The Road Less Travelled. Try out this podcast and print off the activities. Hope you enjoy the story! If you're interested then I'll publish the links each week and you can follow the story. Write a comment at the end of this post if you'd like to have this on the blog.

My weekend away.
This weekend I was lucky enough to go to the Hunter Valley with my husband and eldest daughter. We stayed at Cypress Lakes Resort. The purpose of the weekend was to raise money for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. Over $1million was raised over the 2 days. There were auctions where people bought various items from media advertising to holidays to motorbikes to make up! Such was the variety of the items auctioned.
Here a few photos I took of scenery around the area. Hope you enjoy the slide show. If you like the photos, leave a comment at the end of the post!

Thursday, the 17th March is my country, Ireland's National Day. Can you do a Google search and find out what the holiday is called and in Comments at the end of this post, write 2 things that are associated with the day?
What do you talk about when you're with friends? Have a listen to this casual conversation between two friends and complete the worksheet too.
Have a good week and happy blogging!

Week 4
G'day all
I hope you had an enjoyable weekend. Mine was rather busy as I went out to a concert on Saturday night and then my husband and I went to visit friends yesterday. They live in a little town called Binda. It was a two and a half hour journey by car! I was so glad to get out of the car by the time we got home last evening!
Fisrst thing today is for you to finish off the work on the counsellor's talk. You can give me the workshhets when you've finished. Then once I've seen your summary of the talk, you can post it on your blog.
How many of you knew that yesterday was Clean Up Australia Day? What do you know about the event? Have a listen to this short talk and then answer the questions about it. You can print off the worksheet to help you.
I'm not adding else to the blog today because I'd still like you to write a recount about your weekend. As I wrote last week, I'd like you to write your recount (check last week's post for Recount structure) in your post, copy it in Word, email it to me and I'll correct it and send it back to you to edit in your blog.

My daughter took this photo of the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship last Tuesday. while it was docked at Circular Quay. Good special effects? |
I'm delighted that you managed to get so much done without me last Monday. Thank you all for helping each other! We'll get stuck into adding links and pictures today if you haven't already done so!
Thanks for posting comments at the end of last week's post. It was good to read them all! Remember that you don't usually write comments on your own blog!
I'm sorry that the link to Patricia's podcast didn't work last week. I'm working on questions to go with another podcast and I'll post it next week probably.
Last Thursday, Luisa, one of the TAFE counsellors came to talk to the students from AMEP-A and B. Open this link, print off the worksheet and then listen to the podcast and answer the questions. This will be especially useful for the students who don't attend on Thursdays and missed the talk.
You can write the summary for homework and hand it in next Monday.
When you finish that work you can write a recount of how you spent your weekend. You can copy your draft to word and then email it to me to correct it. You can then publish the final copy. Remember that a recount has an orientation (this tells the reader who, why, when, where and/or what) It really orients the reader to the text. After that you have a series of events in the past tense (usually the simple past). You can add some personal comment about the events and at the end there is an optional coda. For example....I was tired but we had a good day!
Happy blogging!

Week 2
G'day all
I'm sorry I can't be with you today but I have something important to do that can't wait. Please read the post below and complete the activities. If you get stuck then ask your classmates or ask me in class tomorrow and I'll try to solve your problems.
Welcome today to Sara who wasn't here last week. Welcome too to any 'new' students. Perhaps you can help them to create a blog today???
I've added your blog address to mine but I wasn't able to open one or two of them because I wasn't able to follow your writing clearly. Can you please ask Andrew to show you the list and then make sure your writing is clear, for example is it a - or an _ or something else! I seem to remember that I had a problem with Mia's and Carolina's blogs!
Well done on creating your blogs last week! Some of you did the job with ease while some of you took a bit longer to get your blogs set up! I've written comments on all the blogs that posted something last class so please read them! ( Again, if you can't remember your blog address try the link in the side bar or ask Andrew to show you the list!)
By the end of today, you should all have:
The first thing I'd like you to do today is to post a comment to me at the end of this post! Can you find where the comments button is? Click on it and tell me what you did yesterday (Sunday) to keep cool in the heat! You only need to write a sentence or two. Sign in first to your blog and you'll have no trouble adding the comment!
Those of you who went to have the library tour with Andrew should find the next exercise easy!
First, you should print off the library exercises and complete the answers as you listen to an interview with one of the librarians called Patricia. (Ask Andrew to get the headphones from my office if he hasn't done so already). When you have all the answers to the questions you are to present the information as a report in your blog. I do not want a list of numbered answers but paragraphs.
Please try to complete these activities today. It is very easy to fall behind with the work and then you won't have time to catch up later! All activities must be done as this work is counted towards your reading/writing portfolio!
If you finish all this within the class time, open Issues in English which is available on the desktop from the Start button! Choose a topic and complete the activities!

Week 1: Welcome to blogging!
G'day all and welcome to the first blog for 2011!
Each week in this class you will use blogging to help you to improve your English. You'll complete activities and tasks posted in this blog and even write in your own blog. You'll do a variety of activites from reading to listening to writing and even video!
Some of you are familiar with the process so you will be able to begin straight away! For those of you who have never blogged before I'm sure you'll really enjoy it once we begin! I'll help you to create your own blogs and then you can get started. Just follow the instuctions on the printed sheets.
Before we do anything though, we need to read about how to sit at the computer and the correct posture to use. Open this link and complete all the activities associated with it. Please show me your work when it has been done.

As you know today is Valentine's Day. Do you know the origin of this day? Is it celebrated in your country? If you are in a relationship will you celebrate today/night? What will you do for your partner or him/her for you? What was the most romantic Valentine's Day you've had so far? Do you think it is good to celebrate this day? Have a look at this information about Saint Valentine's Day. If you still need to know more, have a look at this video from the history channel.
